Celiac Disease
Gluten free seems to be more common these days but what do you know about Celiac Disease?
Celiac Disease is something that is commonly seen now in the medical world. Although reportedly one 1% of the population is affected, more and more people are becoming aware of this disorder.
Celiac disease is a chronic digestive and immune disorder. With this condition a substance called gluten damages the small intestines. Gluten is a group of proteins in wheat, barley, rye and other cross grains. Celiac Disease can affect more than just the stomach. When the small intestines are inflamed they prevent the body from absorbing the nutrients the body needs to function.
Symptoms: bloating, chronic diarrhea, constipation, gas, nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain, anemia (decreased healthy red blood cells)
Diagnosis- Celiac Disease is diagnosed by physicians using your medical history as well as a blood test that checks for high antibodies in a IgA-transglutaminise. Physicians may also do a biopsy of the small instance with a procedure called a gastroscopy.
Treatment- although there isn’t a cure for Celiac Disease, many people can reduce or eliminate their symptoms by following a gluten free diet and removing items in their house that contain gluten (check your soaps, shampoo, conditioner, laundry detergents, etc.)
Although this condition may seem debilitating at first, there are many more options for living gluten free.
Here are some personally tried items to help you live an easier gluten free life:
Crackers- Simple Mills Almond Flour crackers (available at Costco)
Almond Flour- many great recipes to use and great protein (also available at Costco and other health food stores)
Farmers Organic oats- again many recipes you can use with this
Bob’s Redmill Gluten Free 1-1 Flour
Made Good- organic and gluten free granola bars, cookies, crispy squares
Siete- gluten free chips, churro snacks, wraps, nacho chips
